Hi, did that title even give you anxiety? Me too, and I’m the one who wrote it. Welcome to this post of: A Therapist's Guide to Finding Calm.
Anxiety often emerges as an uninvited partner (buddy, enemy?), causing ripples in our emotional waters. As a marriage and family therapist, I witness the profound impact of anxiety on individuals and their relationships. Before we tackle what to do with it, let’s make sure we all have a similar anxiety definition.
Defining Anxiety:
Anxiety is a complex, multifaceted emotion that can manifest in various ways. It's not just about worry or fear; it's a visceral response that can affect our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Whether triggered by external stressors or internal uncertainties, anxiety has a way of coloring our perception, making the world seem more threatening than it is. Recognizing anxiety is the first step toward reclaiming a sense of balance and control in our lives.
The Core of Anxiety:
Understanding why anxiety arises is crucial in addressing its impact. Sometimes, it stems from past experiences, while other times, it may be a response to future uncertainties. I often explore the relational aspects of anxiety—how it weaves its threads into our connections with others. Unresolved conflicts, communication challenges, or changes in family dynamics can all contribute to the rise of anxiety within the family system.
Coping Strategies for Individuals:
Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques: Amid anxiety, grounding techniques can anchor us to the present moment. Simple mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing or focusing on the senses, can temporarily interrupt the cycle of anxious thoughts. Follow along here for some somatic tips on anxiety and relief.
Thought Restructuring: Challenge and reframe anxious thoughts. Instead of catastrophizing or assuming the worst, consciously work on adopting a more balanced and realistic perspective. Cognitive-behavioral strategies can be particularly effective in reshaping thought patterns.
Self-Care Rituals: Establishing self-care rituals is like offering a gentle balm to an anxious soul. Whether it's a quiet walk, indulging in a favorite hobby, or practicing relaxation exercises, carving out time for self-nurturing activities is essential. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, timely, or expensive. It just has to be a time for you. (I like to shake it out and dance for my favorite song twice a day.)
Coping Strategies for Relationships:
Open Communication: In relationships, open communication is a potent antidote to anxiety. Create a safe space for dialogue, allowing each person to express their feelings without judgment. Discussing anxieties together fosters understanding and connection.
Boundaries and Support: Establishing healthy boundaries is crucial when anxiety affects a relationship. Clearly defining personal needs and boundaries can prevent the unintentional escalation of anxiety. Additionally, offering and seeking support within the relationship builds a foundation of mutual care.
Couples Therapy: Seeking the guidance of a couples therapist can be transformative. Couples therapy provides a structured environment for exploring the roots of anxiety within the relationship, fostering effective communication, and co-creating strategies for managing anxiety together.
Conclusion:
Anxiety is a common companion. We can welcome it as a friend but honestly, sometimes we don’t want it there at all. Sometimes it can protect us but other times it’s sort of a pain. Is there a cure? I really don’t know, but there are ways to lessen the anxious feeling and help give you the power once more.
